As I sat outside on my patio enjoying my morning coffee watching the birds go about their day, I noticed a thought pop into my mind. It was something that I hadn’t thought about in a long time. I felt curious and this made me stop and think about my thoughts. Why did that thought just come to me? That was an old belief. Wow! So, I began to ask myself what are my beliefs? What beliefs am I holding on to? What had I created for myself?
And I realized that:
A belief is a thought. Something you have thought about so often that you don’t even recognize the thought. Interesting!
A belief is a thought that you have without question, and so many of our thoughts we don’t even think to question. Hmmmm!
And yet, you really do get to decide what you are going to think about. If you want to and if you pay attention!
Bad things are going to happen as life is not always a bed of roses, and that’s ok. That’s life and that’s how we learn. However, you can become in charge of your thoughts and you can begin to notice how they make you feel, whether the thoughts or feelings are good or bad.
You get to decide whatever you want to believe regardless of whatever you have been told in the past. And you may change your mind at any time as no one can tell you what you can and cannot think about… right?
Therefore, at any time we get to choose what we want to believe.
So, take a moment to think about all of your beliefs. Look at them and notice what they have created for you in your life? What are they creating for you now? Ask yourself, what beliefs am I holding onto?
Look at your beliefs around your values around money, religion, sex, relationships, work, aging, health, life.
You see, most of our beliefs come from our parents, teachers and friends and we get them at a very young age, and slowly we begin to live and act according to what we believe.
What were you told when you were younger?
Me, I was lead to believe that a woman’s place is in the home and that it’s my job take good care of my children my husband and my house. I was to go to school, get a job and get married and hopefully have kids. Bam! What more could I want?
Oh! not forgetting to be polite and always say “please” and “thank you”.
I watched my mum living this way. She worked hard Monday through Friday and when she got home even if she didn’t feel like it, she always cooked dinner for her family. The house was always spotless and on her days off, the clothes were washed and neatly ironed, the house was polished from top to bottom and when everything was done and dusted then, she gave herself permission to rest. My job as a very young girl was to participate and help her with the house work, no questions asked.
Thank goodness, I never held onto to those beliefs.
So, what if you begin to question your beliefs and look to see if your thoughts are serving you? How do they make you feel? What have you created from your beliefs? Take a look around you, look at the house you live in, the job you have, your partner, the car you drive. You and your beliefs have created this!
Do you believe you are worthy? Do you believe that you can lose weight, exercise regularly and maintain it? Do you believe you can be in a loving relationship now that you are older? Do you like who you see when you look in the mirror?
Pay attention and notice, what are the thoughts you keep thinking? What beliefs have you accepted about yourself? What do you want to believe about you?
You can believe anything you want.
Can you imagine the life that you want? Are you making the most of your life?
Remember, the only thing that holds you back are your thoughts. Thoughts create feelings and feelings create action.
So, are you ready to take action and make a change? Ask yourself, do you need to make a change?
